Thanks to Aisling Heraty from Westport LGFC for this match report

Westport Ladies Gaelic Club Senior team have been waiting a long time to get their hands on silverware. On Saturday the 13th of October in Swinford Amenity park their long wait finally came to an end.A huge crowd travelled from Westport to see this bunch of warrior women take on Charlestown in the Intermediate Championship final. They came in their club colours of navy and sky blue with their flags and their signs. They came ready to cheer on their team, to be the 16th woman. They knew the work this gang had put in with Managers, James Gillespie, Niamh McLoughlin and Tony Keane. They could feel the wait for silverware would soon be over. The game got off to a great start with some great scores in the first half. Katie Coughlan was the first to hit the target with a brilliant goal, Tara Hastings split the posts with 3 great points, Nicola O'Malley got 0-1, and Shelly O'Grady got 1-1. Charlestown were a tough opposition who never let up but with Noirin Moran, Roisín Mellet and the trio of O'Malley sisters covering serious ground in the middle of the pitch they found it hard to break through. On the occasions that they did, Westport's Anna Scott was on top form and was on hand to stop their attack. Lisa Scahill was also playing well and was unlucky to find herself with a yellow card just before the half time whistle. The half time score told it's own story as Westport were 2-5 and Charlestown 0-1. Westport seemed happy to defend their lead in the second half with Shelly O'Grady scoring their only 2 points of the second half. There were 2 yellows for Charlestown and a yellow for Westport's Elle Ryder.Charlestown attempted a comeback and managed to get 4 points on the board in the second half but Westport's defenders held tight until the final whistle. The roars at the final whistle nearly took the roof off the stand as supporters cheered and headed to the pitch to celebrate with their Champions. The long wait is over.A huge thanks to all the local businesses who got on board with our ladies this season. Thanks to Tom Bourke and The Towers Bar and Restaurant, Paul Gibbons of Connacht Gold, Lidl in Westport and our brilliant physio Julie Moore from Body Balance physiotherapy.Your support means so much to the club and the girls and we are very grateful.
